Flash & ActionScript

I have been working with Flash for several years. Although this profile currently contains only ActionScript 2 projects, I have also worked heavily with ActionScript 3 and MXML (since the early beta days of the language).

Bri Pong

Flash 7, ActionScript 2

This was the first Flash game I created. I wrote it during my junior year at James Madison as a project for one of the Flash courses I was taking. In essence, it's just a remake of the old classic Pong game, but I added a bit of visual interest to it. (For instance, the randomly generated, randomly moving stars in the background. I also added sound effects.)

Basically, you go head to head with the computer in an attempt to slip the ball past the computer's paddle without letting it past your own. Each new round starts off with the ball moving a little faster than the previous round, and as the round continues, the ball increases its velocity. The first player to reach a score of 10 wins.

Drum Machine

Flash 7, ActionScript 2

This was one of my larger Flash projects during my Senior year at James Madison. It is an interactive drum machine application, written entirely in ActionScript 2.

Also included in this app is a short history of drum machines, a few samples of artists who use drum machines in their music, and a "help" section explaining how to use the app. Since the full blown version (with animations and all) takes a bit of a higher end system to run, I allowed the user to run the app in high end or low end mode.

The drum machine itself gives you several empty channels to play with. The user can assign a drum sample (chosen from a bank of available sounds) to each channel. Controls are also provided for setting the tempo, volume, and pan. Clicking on a channels timeline will add or remove drum hits, and clicking the "play" button will play the drum pattern you have created.

Interactive Portfolio

Flash 7, ActionScript 2

This is an interactive version of the portfolio you are currently browsing. It was a fun exercise in Flash animation, since most of my experience in Flash has been in the area of ActionScript development.

In addition to creating all of the art and animations in this movie, I also wrote and recorded the sound track theme.

This Flash portfolio is currently outdated.

Rosetta Stone (online demo)

Flash 8, ActionScript 2

The online Rosetta Stone Flash demo is really two applications in one. The first is an explanation of the product and how to use it. The second is an interactive demo of the product.

Since the actual application this is demonstrating was written for Director, I had to recreate it from scratch in ActionScript. I faced a number of challenges in localizing the demo, (which was a very important goal for the company). Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to discuss in any more detail the nature of those challenges or how they were overcome.

Please feel free to try the demo!
